Ralf Schink's tips & tricks vol. 2 Hello everybody!
My name is Ralf Schink and I am a member of the G-70 R&D and Demo Team. In the last workshop we have been talking about putting together some sounds. Of course this would be a subject that could be continued for a long time, but as we have so many more things to talk about, I would like to continue this workshop series by talking about selecting the right style, adjusting it, and selecting the appropriate sound for the song that you would like to play, in short:
How to create registrations for a Song:
First we have to select a song that we want to play. As you will certainly understand I can only give an example for 1 Song, but if you follow the steps of programming the G-70 in the same way for the song that you would like to play I am sure that you will have a very satisfying result. I was thinking to select a song that would be in the charts at the moment, but while researching, I figured that this selection would always be a bit unfair, because naturally the charts are different in every country. That’s why I actually went back to select an old standard song, that should be known in most of the countries by most of the people, “Que Sera” from the movie with Doris Day and James Stuart. In this workshop I would like to use Styles rather than Midi Files. So, as a first step I always try to find the appropriate style. As we know, the Song is in 3/4, so let’s start looking for Styles that are in 3/4. This would be all the Waltzes, off course, but we could also have a look at styles in 6/8, because this sometimes works as well, or even better, depending on the musical taste that we would like to give to the Song. The best would be, to play or sing the melody first without a style to get some feeling for it, before we select the style.
Let’s start by switching the instrument off and on. Like this we can be sure that we all will start with the same setting. After that please select the Arranger Button in the Keyboard Mode Area. This will bring the Instrument into the Arranger mode, and automatically select a Split Point (see Image n°1)

STEP 1 Now, please select the Style Wien Waltz by pressing the Ballroom Button in the Style Selection Area, and then simply touch the name of the style on the Screen (see Image n°2).

After that you should press the flashing Exit Button to return to the main Page of the display. Also please select Variation 1 in the Style Control Area on the left side of the G 70’s Panel.

STEP 2 Then you will select a Sound for playing the Melody with the right Hand. The Green and the Red Switches of UP 1 in the Keyboard Part Section on the right side of the Panel of the G 70 should be switched on. All the Other Red Switches in the Area should be switched off. I suggest to use a Flute Sound to start the Song with. Press the Button “Wind” in the Tone Area of the Panel (see Image n°4)

After that, please touch the field “FluteVibAtk” on the Screen. While playing on the right side of the Keyboard you should now hear a Flute Sound (see Image n°5).

Press Exit.
STEP 3 Now I suggest to put a little more Ambience to the Flute. Please, press the Effect Switch on the left side of the display (see Image n°6).

Next touch the Edit Switch of the Reverb field on the Display.

As the easiest step for changing the ambience of the sound we will change the Reverb Time to “92”. This will virtually increase the size of the room that you are playing in. Please touch the Time field on the Screen and use the Data Entry Dial to increase the Value to 92 (see image n°8). If you want you can also change the value to any other Number. You should do this while playing in order to understand the relation between the Parameter and the sound.

Press Exit.
STEP 4 Now we will move the Flute a little bit to the right side of the Stereo Image. Press the red Part Button on the right side of the Drawbars. Touch the 1st Round Potentiometer on top of the Volume Slider in the Display.

Now you can use the corresponding Drawbar for adjusting the Value of the Panorama. Again, please change the Value while playing, so that you will get a feeling for this Parameter. My suggestion is to set the Pan to R 22 (see Image n°10).

Press Exit.
STEP 5 Ok, now we should save this Setting as a User Program. Press Set List in the User Program Field on the Panel.

Touch “Write” on the Screen, and select a Place that you want to use for this User Program.

Now please Type the Name “Que Sera 1” by using the Key Pad on the Touch Screen (see Image n°13).

Touch Execute on the Screen.

Press Exit
You have now successfully created a User program. But off course we are not at the End yet!
STEP 6 As a next step we want to create a second User Program for the second Part of the Song. Let’s now use “Que Sera 1” as a starting point for creating “Que Sera2”. This will save us from repeating all the Effect Settings, and the Style Selection, etc… Please reselect “Que Sera 1” now. One possibility for doing so would be going into the Set list in the User Program Field on the Panel and select the User program “Que Sera 1” on the touch Screen.
STEP 7 Assuming that you have now selected the User Program “Que Sera 1” we are going to continue by changing the Sound of UP1. I would like to create a Piano Patch with a Piano Sound that automatically plays in Octaves. Be sure that the Green UP1 Button in the Keyboard Part Field is lit, and then you can press the Piano Button in the Tone Part on the Panel.

(Be sure not to press the Piano Button in the Easy Setting field. If you have accidentally done this, please go back to the beginning of chapter 6 and start again). Please select “The Grand X” on the Touch Screen and press Exit.
STEP 8 In the next step please press and hold “Melody Intell” in the Tone Effects field on the very right side of the Panel on the G 70. Select Page 3 and touch the “Octave Type1” function on the Screen. This function will add another Note, one Octave down, played by the Piano.

Press Exit and switch on the Melody Intelligence function in the Tone Effects Field. Now play a chord with the left Hand and play a Melody in the right hand. You will immediately hear that the Piano is now played in Octaves. Switch Melody Intelligence on and off and listen to the difference in sound.
STEP 9 In analogy to step 4 now we will move the Piano Sound a little bit to the left in the stereo field. My suggestion is L 20.

STEP 10 For changing the Variation of the Style please change to Variation Number 2 in the Style Control Panel.
STEP 11 Now it is time for saving this setting as the User Program “Que Sera 2”. Please refer to Step 5 for doing this. I recommend saving the 2nd User Program close to the first one, because we want to change them continuously in the progress of the song.

STEP 12 Please reselect “Que Sera 1” as a starting point for our 3rd User Program. Now we want to create some beautiful Strings for both Hands. Let’s start with the Strings for the right Hand. Please switch on the green UP1 Button in the Keyboard Part Field on the Panel and press the grey Strings Switch in the Tone field, and select St. Strings on Page 1.

Now press the green UP2 switch in the Keyboard Part field, press again the grey Strings Button, and select St. Slow Strings on Page 1.

Press Exit.
For hearing both String Sounds when you play on the Keyboard you will have to switch on the red UP2 button in the Keyboard Part Field on the Panel. Now also switch on the red LW1 button in the Keyboard Part field. Here we are actually taking advantage of the Factory Setting, and we will already find the St. Slow Strings selected for the Lower 1 Part.

STEP 13 When we play the Melody now, we will listen to a rather dense String Sound. As a first Step we will change the Octave of the UP2 Slow Strings Sound. Switch on the Green UP2 button in the Keyboard Part field on the Panel, then touch the arrow that shows in the upper direction and change the value in the little Screen to 1. When you play again on the Keyboard you will notice, that the Sound has now changed, especially when you play long notes.

STEP 14 To make the sound more playable, let’s change the key Touch Curve to a more “easy to play” mode. Please press the Menu Button on the right side from the display

Press “Split & Touch”

Press “Key touch”

Now press Upper 1 and adjust the Curve to “Low”

Press Exit.
STEP 15 As we are now using 3 different Parts in the same time, Mixing is becoming really important. Please press the red Part Button, adjust the Values according to the Picture and listen to the difference in Sound.

STEP 16 Please select Variation No 4 in the Style Control Field on the left side of the Panel.
STEP 17 Now it is the time for saving this User Program with the Name “Que Sera 3”. Please follow the instruction in step No. 5.

Congratulations! Now it is time for playing the Song. Enjoy!
As a reference you will find the 3 Que Sera User Programs here to be downloaded. Please refer to Tips & Tricks Vol. 1 for instructions how to add these User programs to your Database.
As a bonus, I would like to give away 2 of the Performance Memories that I have been using during my Demo Tours.
Toot’s Harmonica This is a Patch that uses a warm Synth Sound and an Acoustic Bass in the Lower Parts. There is also a Ride Cymbal that reacts very much on the velocity. On the Upper Part I put a very beautiful Harmonica Sound with some nice Stereo Delay Effect. Here you can download it and put it into your Database. (Please refer to Tips & Tricks Vol. I for instructions)
Bandoneon This Patch uses the new Bandoneon Sound of the G 70 that has been derived from ROLAND’s successful V-Accordion Series, on the Upper Parts and a typical Piano Sound Ambience that is frequently used for Tango Music, on the Lower Parts. Here you can download it and put it into your Database. (Please refer to Tips & Tricks Vol 1 for instructions) (Perhaps there could be a direct link...)
I hope you enjoy using the 2 registration examples as much as I do.
