Ralf Schink's Tips & Tricks vol. 10

In November 2006 Roland Europe proudly introduced the new edition of the Roland Keyboardclub website and the new webshop for purchasing Styles and Midi Files.
Since the quality of data on this site is very high and the price of each Style / Standard Midi Files is very affordable I am sure that many of you will download a lot of Styles or Standard Midi Files.
As a result sooner or later your internal memory will be full and you might want to get an external memory card and store your data onto this external memory.
In this workshop I would like to explain what to do in order to successfully rearrange the memory structure of the Music Assistant User Program that comes with each Music Assistant/Style unit.

Personally I like to work with compact flash cards, because they are physically rather stabile, but the procedure that I am about to describe will off course work in the same way with all other available memory media like SD card etc.
First thing to do is off course to buy a new memory card and the appropriate PCMCIA card adaptor.
You will find both in most types of media stores or in the internet.

As a next step you need to put the memory card into the adapter and then into the slot that you will find on the rear side of your keyboard named “PCMCIA”.
Then you will have to format the card. You have to do this with the keyboard and not with the computer, because there must be a defined structure of folders that will be automatically created by the keyboard.
Press disk on the panel of the keyboard.

Press Format on the Touch Screen.

Press external media on the Touch Screen.

Confirm with YES.
Now the instrument will create the following data structure.

You will see this data structure, after connecting the Keyboard to your computer via USB and pressing menu on the panel of the instrument,

pressing USB data storage on the Touch Screen,

and pressing external memory on the Touch Screen.

This procedure will create an external volume on your computers desktop, named E80_CARD or G70_Card or E50_Card etc…

Please open this volume and you will see the correct data structure for the external memory.

Now you can Drag & Drop the content of the folder “Put New Styles Here” into the corresponding folder of the external data card and “Put New Music Assistant Here” into the folder “Put New User Programs Here”. On the external data card there is no Music Assistant folder. Therefore you have to use the User Programs folder instead.

After that please unmount the external memory card from your computer and Press disconnect on the Touch Screen.

Press Exit on the panel of the instrument.

As a next step you will have to save the complete User Program set onto the external memory card.
For doing so please press Disk & Media on the panel of the instrument.

Then press Save and User Program set on the Touch Screen.

Type “User 01” or any other name by using the number pad on the Touch Screen.
Press execute on the Touch Screen.

In case this message appears, please confirm with Yes.
Press Exit.
Now the path to the external memory card is established.

Changing of the Memory Link in each User Program

Next, please press Style in the Finder section on the panel and external memory on the Touch Screen.
This will update the Style list, and you will find the Style that you have just copied.

Now, please press USER PRG in the finder section on the panel and external memory on the Touch Screen.
This will update the User Program list, and you will find the User Program that you have just copied.

Please press the User Program that you have copied (here Blue Spain) on the Touch Screen.
The instrument will indicate “Style not found”.

The Software that you can download on RolandKeyboardclub is programmed in the way that it will work on internal memory. The instrument will try to find the style that is recalled by the User Program on the internal memory.
We have to change the User Programs link to the style now manually.

To do so please select the Style that you have copied by pressing Style in the finder section on the panel of your instrument.
Press Exit.

Now you have to newly save this User Program.
Please press List in the User Program section on the panel of the keyboard.

Press Write and select the destination space on the Touch Screen.

Press Execute on the Touch Screen.

In case a message like this appears please confirm with YES.

You can repeat the chapter “Changing of the Memory Link in each User Program” for each Style you have downloaded from RolandKeyboardclub if you want to use the external memory card.
Depending on the size of your external memory card (up to 4GB) you now can store thousands of Styles and User Programs.

Yours Sincerely
Ralf Schink, January 2007
