- Q:
What is the “Image Viewer” function on the E-80?
A: This function allows you to import and visualize the Bitmap image directly from the E-80, so that it is possible to see the images directly on the E-80 LCD or on an external screen, thanks to the Video Output. This application allows you to create a slideshow, which can be controlled via the Arrow buttons, the Foot Switch pedal, by User Program recall, or automatically by the E-80 itself.

- Q:
I heard that the new E-50/E-60/E-80 have the Database Manager software included. Where can I find it?
A: The Database you are referring to is the “G-70 Database Manager Software”. It is compatible with all the new E-series models, as is all the musical data (User, Program, Style, Song, Music Assistant).
This guarantees a great flexibility in exchanging the data between the E-50, E-60, E-80, G-70 without facing any problems in the conversion.
(E-80:E-50:E-60:database manager)
- Q:
Are the E-50/E-60 sounds similar to the E-80 ones?
A: The sounds of the E-50/60 come from the E-80 Music Workstation, but the E-80 ones are more powerful and with higher definition.
For example, the new Drum samples (Snares, Toms, Hi-hats, Cymbals.) and the new Realtime Drum Percussion Phrases are stereo-sampled in the E-80 while in the E-50 and E-60 they are mono-sampled components (with stereo panning). The result is that the two sound sources (E-50/60 and E-80) are perfectly compatible (Roland guarantees the Style, Song and User Program compatibility) even if the quality of sound is different.
(E-80:E-50:E-60:sound)
- Q:
What are the "Realtime Drum Percussion Phrases?"
A: The “Drum Percussion phrases” allow you to have a huge variety of high quality percussion sounds.
They also incorporate long samples of Cymbal Roll, Wind Chimes, and Bongos, played in real time to reproduce typical phrases.
This innovative feature is used in the E-50/60/80 styles. Moreover, the Realtime Drum Percussion Phrases can also be used in the parts assigned to the keyboards.

- Q:
I have a huge collection of MIDI files. Can I expand the internal memory of the E-80 with a Hard Disk?
A: The E-80 is equipped with a PCMCIA slot that allows you to use a variety of memory formats, such as SD Card, SmartMedia, CompactFlash. With regards to the Hard Disk, the E-80 can also be expanded by using the 1.0 inch Micro Drive Hard Disk, which allows you to use up to 4 Giga Bytes of memory space. This a feature also found on the models E-50, E-60 and G-70.
(internal memory:expansion)
- Q:
Do the new E-50/E-60 models include the same styles as the E-80?
A: The new E-50 and E-60 are equipped with a great selection of styles coming from the flagships E-80 and G-70. The structure of the styles is similar because each is made of 4 Intro, 4 Ending, 4 Main Variation and 6 Fills, guaranteeing the compatibility between all the models of the E-series (E-50/-60/-80).
(styles: compatibility)
- Q:
I read somewhere that the E-80 workstation is just the amplified 61 key version of the G-70 – is this true?
A: Absolutely not! The E-80 is completely a new project that includes a lot of new features over and above those of the G-70.
First of all, the Sound Engine of the E-80 has contains a much larger memory. This allows you to have many more new High Definition sounds (new Stereo Grand Piano, New Basses, new Acoustic Guitars, new Electric Guitar, New Drum Kits, New Percussion Phrases....).What’s more, all the styles have been adjusted in a recording studio, resulting in a level of quality never heard before! In addition, when using the E-80 styles you can get 3 dedicated MFX (not in the G-70).
These are just a few examples - the E-80 incorporates many other new functions that make it superior to the G-70 from both the musical and technological point of view.
(E-80, G-70, differences)
- Q:
What is meant by “ New independent EQ for each Style Part including Drum instrument”?
A: This unique feature allows you to have a dedicated 3 band Equalizer for each sound. The playback of the E-80 styles is therefore really good because you can control the volume and the frequencies of all the instruments in the best way, like a professional musical production.
For example, the guitar has its own frequency spectrum without ever overlapping any of the other sounds. You can even have one dedicated setting for the snare drum, another for the kick, and so on.

When I use the USB MIDI connection between the G-70 and the Pc sometimes the G-70 cannot be recognized as external MIDI interface in my Software Sequencer. What should I do ?

- Q:
Hello Roland staff! Basically I’m a Piano player and I’m planning to buy the G-70 for the quality of the Piano sound and because I would like to start using arranger keyboard. My concern is that I’m not so skilled to play chord with left hand (like an Organist). Is it any possibilities to have a different way for controlling the G-70 Arranger section without splitting the keyboard?
A: On G-70 there are more than one way to use the Chord recognition zone for the Arranger section. One of them is the “Pianist” mode. When you press the [PIANO] button on the Panel Layout the G-70 software recalls the Pianist chord recognition.
In this case you will be able to play any kind of voicing in the whole keyboard without taking care of the split point. Moreover, in this mode the Arranger
can recognize the combination of the left hand + the right hand to build the chord. In this case, for instance, you will be able to play the root of the note on left hand and the chord notes on right hand.

Near to the slot PCMCIA there is a switch symbolized by a lock: moving the switch to the opened lock icon the internal memory is unlocked and you can save all the data in it.

External Sequencer Playback Errors
A: Roland Intelligent Arranger products have advanced MIDI instructions (Control Changes, Program Changes, etc.) embedded in the Music Styles to make them sound as great as they do. When playing Intelligent Arranger products from their internal keyboards, this data is processed quickly and without error. High speed internal MIDI communications have a lot to do with the smoothness of the arranger functions.
When this data is transmitted through the "MIDI out" port and recorded in an external MIDI sequencer, and then subsequently played back to the Roland product via MIDI, it can present too much information for external MIDI communications to handle. This may result in notes being cut off, irregular timing, etc.
The solution to this problem is to filter out, edit or reduce some of the control changes or other excess data in the resulting sequencer file before playing it back.

Arranger won't Start Playing
A: If the EM-2000 Arranger won't start playing (even though SYNCHRO START and START/STOP are lit, and the TEMPO lights are flashing), check to make sure the sustain pedal is not plugged into the FOOT SWITCH or FOOT PEDAL jacks on the rear panel.
Though the function of the these jacks are programmable, the default settings are "Arranger Start/Stop." When a pedal is connected to one of these jacks, the EM-2000 is waiting for you to press the pedal to start the Arranger. To remedy this, always connect your sustain pedal to the input labeled SUSTAIN FOOTSWITCH.
(EM-2000)
- Q:
Managing Polyphony
A: The polyphony is actually considered 32 Partials of polyphony and if every sound used only one partial, the instrument would be able to play back 32 notes.
Many instrument sounds use 2 layered Partials per note. The more complex the sound, the more likely it is that it is layering 2 Partials.
The number of partials per Tone is documented in the back of your manual on the chart that listed all the sounds. 22 notes is probably a fairly accurate number of notes that it can play back before it runs out and begins stealing Partials from other parts.
Also, most of the drums are 1 Partial but that also counts toward the polyphony total, and complicated drum patterns can use up a lot of notes, especially when you use Cymbals and Hi-Hats.

MIDI Channel Implementation
A: Channel 1 - Note To Arranger. This is the Channel that is used to trigger the arranger from an external device like a digital piano or the PK-5 Foot Controller.
Channel 2 - Manual Bass. Manual bass is used for walking bass lines on the left side of the keyboard split. It is generally set an octave lower than the lower part, and on the GS compatible intelligent arrangers, this part is monophonic.
It is also intelligent in that it plays the root of your left hand chord , even it if they are inverted
Channel 3 - Lower Part. This part is designed to be the left side of a
keyboard split. On high end E series, it can be layered with the Manual Bass and it can also be layered with the accompaniment parts.
Channel 4 - Upper Part. The part is designed to be the right side of a
keyboard split and the melody part when playing the arranger. On E series that do not have an Upper 2 part, the Upper part is also used for Melody Intelligence. Melody intelligence is a harmonization of the melody line based on the chords that are being played in the left hand.
Channel 5 - Accompaniment 1. This part is used when the arranger is in Advanced accompaniment mode. It plays the added spice parts like brass stabs or string lines.
Channel 6 - Accompaniment 2. This part is also used when the arranger is in Advanced mode. It is the main accompaniment part such as piano or rhythm guitar.
Channel 7 - Accompaniment 3. This part plays back when the arranger is in Basic accompaniment mode, and it is the only accompany part that plays in Basic mode.
Channel 8 - Accompaniment Bass. This part is dedicated to the accompaniment bass.
Channel 9 - RX Only. This is a blank part that is not used for anything in the E series. It is designed to give you an extra part for MIDI sequencing applications.
Channel 10 - Drums. This is the channel for both manual and accompaniment drums
Channel 11 - Sound FX. This is the channel used for the FX that you assign to buttons on your keyboard.
Channel 12 - Not used by Intelligent Arrangers. This is not used for anything on any E series.
Channel 13 - Upper Part 2
Channel 14 - Not used by Intelligent Arrangers. This is not used for anything on any E series.
Channel 15 - Not used by Intelligent Arrangers. This is not used for anything on any E series.

Wie kann ich ein Backup meiner ZIP-Diskette anfertigen?
A: Starting from system version 1.03 and VariPhrase version 1.10 you can copy Zip disks on the VA-7 itself, which takes rather long. If you happen to have a PC with an internal or external Zip drive, we recommend you use that for copying Zip disks.
In EITHER CASE, the Zip disk MUST BE FORMATTED ON THE VA-7:
1. Press [FUNCTION MENU], touch "Disk" and "Utility".
2. Touch "ZIP Eject" to eject the original Zip disk.
3. Insert the new Zip disk into the drive.
4. In the Utility menu, touch "Format".
5. Touch "ZIP" to select the Zip drive, then touch "Quick" or "Full", depending on how thoroughly you want to format the Zip disk.
6. You are now asked whether it is OK to erase all data on that Zip disk while formatting it ("... Are You Sure?"). Touch "YES".
You can now copy data to the new Zip disk, which we shall call the "destination disk" here.
A. Copying a VA-7 Zip disk using the VA-7 (takes a long time, consider working with your PC)
1. Insert the Zip disk to be copied (the source) into the VA-7's drive. Also prepare a second Zip disk (the one you just formatted).
2. Press [FUNCTION MENU], touch "Disk" and "Utility".
3. Touch "Copy". Acknowledge the "....FOR PERSONAL BACK-UP USE ONLY!....." message by touching "PROCEED".
4. Select the data type you want to copy first (Style, Song, User Prg, Midi Set or VariPhrase).
5. For the "From" and "To" fields, touch "ZIP".
6. Touch "ALL FILES" (copy all files of the selected type), then "EXECUTE".
7. In response to the question whether files of the same name on the destination disk may be overwritten, touch "YES".
8. The VA-7 now loads the first chunk of data from the source disk into its VariPhrase memory. Next, it asks you to insert the destination disk and to touch "EXECUTE".
9. After saving the first data chunk, the VA-7 asks you to insert the source disk again (and to touch "EXECUTE"). The second chunk is loaded. Follow the instructions and repeat the above as often as necessary.
10. Repeat steps 4~9 for the other data types (Style, Song, User Prg, Midi Set and VariPhrase).
B. Copying a VA-7 disk using a PC
1. Format a Zip disk on the VA-7.
2. Insert the Zip disk you wish to copy into the drive connected to your PC (this can be a USB, SCSI or IDE drive - as long as the PC recognizes it).
3. Create a new folder on your PC (not on the Zip disk) and assign it a sensible name ("VA7data", for example).
4. Select all files and folders on the Zip disk: click on the Zip icon in the Explorer (it may be called "removable drive"). The files and folders should appear in the right Explorer window. Hold down the Ctrl key and press A. All files and folders should now be displayed in reverse.
5. Copy those files and folders to the "VA7data" folder. Press and hold Ctrl and C, double-click on the "VA7data" folder, then press Ctrl + V (paste). You could also work using drag & drop, just be sure to copy all files and folders.
6. Insert the new Zip disk into the PC's Zip drive.
7. Select all files and folders inside the "VA7data" folder.
8. Copy those files to the Zip disk. The PC will now tell you that some folders already exist on the Zip disk. Click on the option that allows you to override that warning ("Yes to all").
9. When all data have been copied (which takes longer than Windows would have you believe), you can remove the Zip disk from the drive and use it on your VA-7.

- Q:
My VA-7 still uses software version 1.xx. Can I update it directly to a 2.xx version found on your web pages?
A: The VA-7 can be updated directly. The original (and still available) update package also contains a Zip disk with new music data that take advantage of the new functions. Simply updating the software you downloaded from the web will not install those music data. Please ask your Roland dealer for the official software update for the VA-7.

- Q:
Someone told me about an update for the DisCover5. What's new and where do I find that update?
A: The new version is called 1.01. It provides the following functions:
* Faste file access for Load/Scan/Save Song, Display Lyrics, Update Database, etc.
* All Harmonizer presets have been optimized for an even better sound quality.
* A "Pitch Bender" function for the Vocal Harmonist that allows you to bend the harmony or processed voice notes.
* The "Bogeyman" harmonizer preset has been replaced by the "Tenor" preset.
* The Start position for the Mark/Jump function has been shifted by 12 clocks towards the beginning of the song, because certain commercially available SMFs place their note-on messages before the downbeat. If you select the verse of a Hit-Bit song, for example, you will now also hear the initial notes of that passage.
* A new "Song Data Changes" parameter in the "MIDI Edit - System - Global" menu. It allows you to specify whether the original sound addresses of the songs you play back should be transmitted to MIDI OUT, or whether to use the addresses selected by the Cover function.
The new system system software (version 1.01) for the DisCover5 can be dowbloaded from xxx
(DisCover5)
- Q:
Is there a DisCover-5 map for Cubase SX?
A: There is! The DisCover 5 uses sounds of the so-called "Tone Map 4". The ToneMap4 update for Cubase SX can be downloaded from xxx.
(DisCover 5)
- Q:
Which SmartMedia cards can I use with my DisCover 5?
A: So far, we have tested SmartMedia cards by "SanDisk" and "Samsung" and found that they work! The DisCover 5 accepts 3.3 Volt cards with a capacity between 4 and 128 MB.
(DisCover 5)
- Q:
When I copy 200 songs to the SmartMedia card, the DisCover 5 only recognizes the first 31 (or any other number) of them. Does that mean it's broken?
A: The DisCover 5 loads all files (SMFs) up to the first file with an illegal name. Subsequent "legal" files are ignored.
The names of your SMF files must not contain special characters, like umlauts (ä, ö, ü) or accents (é, à, etc.).
Furthermore, the file name proper may only consist of 8 characters before the ".mid" extension (e.g. "12345678.mid"). The characters mentioned above and symbols, etc., that do not conform to ISO 9660 are considered illegal, which is why the DisCover 5 only recognizes songs up to a file that contains an illegal character.
Use shorter file names, and be sure to chage all non-ISO 9660 characters to something the DisCover 5 can read.
(DisCover 5)
- Q:
Where does the DisCover 5 display the names of my new songs?
A: Press [SONG/RHYTHM FINDER] to the right of the display to call up a three-colum list.
The right-most column ("Genre") contains the file name. (Example: if the file's original name was "12345678.mid", the Genre column now contains "12345678".) The middle column contains no information. You could enter the Author's name yourself if you liked. The left-most column ("Song Name") displays the name of the MIDI file's first track.
Format-0 SMF songs only use one track that contains the data of all MIDI channels. The DisCover 5 uses the name of that track.
Format-1 Standard MIDI Files use separate tracks for the 16 MIDI channels. Note that track 1 does not necessarily transmit on MIDI channel 1 (lots of files assign MIDI channel 10/the drums to track 1). The DisCover 5, however, always uses track 1's name as "Song Name".
(DisCover 5)
- Q:
Why doesn't the DisCover5 recognize my songs if I copy them to the Song folder on the SmartMedia card?
A: Never ever change the folder structure on a SmartMedia card!
The DisCover 5 needs to prepare new songs before it can add them to its Song Finder database. Such "recognized" songs are stored in the Song folder. You should never copy files to that folder. New songs you wish to use must be copied to the "Put New Songs Here" folder. Be sure to only use that folder if you wish to add new songs to your repertoire on SmartMedia!
After copying song files to the correct folder and inserting the SmartMedia in the DisCover 5's slot, the message "SMART MEDIA CONTAINS NEW FILES..." appears. Press "Update the DATABASE" in order to add the new songs to the DisCover 5's database.

- Q:
Selecting Music Styles via MIDI
A: Like most Roland arranger instruments, the EXR-5 and EXR-3 use a combination of program change and control change (CC00 & CC32) message for Music Style addresses (MIDI channel 10).
The PROGRAM CHANGE numbers are used for specifying the desired division of the desired group ("Combo" or "Full Band"):
COMBO
Intro: PC65
Orginal: PC01
Variation: PC09
Fill In To Variation: PC97
Fill In To Original: PC89
Ending: PC73
Full Band
Intro: PC66
Orginal: PC02
Variation: PC10
Fill In To Variation: PC98
Fill In To Original: PC90
Ending: PC74
The Styles are selected by inserting values for CC00 (MSB) and CC32 (LSB) BEFORE the PC (program change) number. To select the Original division of the 72 "CntryPop" style in Combo mode via MIDI, for example, you need to transmit CC00= 16 + CC32= 13 + PC= 65.
A complete list of MIDI addresses can be found in the "EXR-5/EXR-3 MIDI Implementation" document (page 3). Ask you dealer for details.

- Q:
Difference between Performance Memories and User Programs
A: Registrations saved by the user are called "Performance Memories" on the G-series and "User Programs" on the EM, EXR, and E series. Both terms therefore refer to the same concept (registrations). The settings, on the other hand, may be different and incompatible. In other cases, it is possible to load User Program settings from a floppy disk into an instrument that uses "Performance Memories".
(EM-2000, G-1000)
- Q:
Can I save the current system version to floppy disk before updating the system?
A: Yes, you can. Insert a blank (but formatted) floppy disk in the G-1000/EM-2000's drive.
Simultaneously press TRANSPOSER, ONE TOUCH and OCTAVE UP while switching the instrument on.
Follow the instructions that appear in the display. That will save a file by the name of "RES117.SYS" to your floppy disk. That's the system file.
